Diagnostic Procedure
Bone Density Test
A scan that measures bone mineral density to diagnose osteoporosis and assess fracture risk.
A bone density test, also known as a DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), is the gold standard for measuring bone mineral density and diagnosing osteoporosis. This quick, painless, and non-invasive test uses very low-dose X-rays to measure the density of your bones, most commonly at the hip and lumbar spine.
The results of your DEXA scan are reported as a T-score. A T-score of -1.0 or above is considered normal. A score between -1.0 and -2.5 indicates osteopenia (low bone density), and a score of -2.5 or below indicates osteoporosis. Your provider will use this information, along with your medical history and risk factors, to determine the best course of action.
Bone density testing is recommended for all women aged 65 and older, men aged 70 and older, and younger adults who have risk factors for bone loss. These risk factors include family history of osteoporosis, low body weight, smoking, excessive alcohol use, long-term corticosteroid use, and certain medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or hyperthyroidism.
The test takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes and requires no special preparation. You simply lie on a padded table while the DEXA machine scans the targeted areas. There are no injections and no enclosed spaces. At Garden State Medical Group, we perform bone density testing in our in-house diagnostics center for your convenience.
If your results indicate low bone density or osteoporosis, your provider may recommend lifestyle modifications, calcium and vitamin D supplementation, weight-bearing exercise, and in some cases, prescription medications. Regular follow-up scans help track the effectiveness of treatment over time. Schedule your bone density test by calling (201) 453-2800.
