Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Measures lung capacity and airflow to diagnose and monitor conditions like asthma, COPD, and other respiratory disorders.

Pulmonary function testing (PFT) is a group of non-invasive tests that measure how well your lungs are working. These tests assess lung volume, capacity, airflow rates, and gas exchange — providing your provider with essential information for diagnosing and managing respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, pulmonary fibrosis, and other lung diseases.

The most common PFT is spirometry, which measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can empty your lungs. During the test, you breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a machine called a spirometer. You will be asked to take a deep breath and then exhale as hard and fast as possible. The test is repeated several times to ensure accuracy.

PFTs are used to diagnose the type and severity of lung disease, monitor the progression of chronic respiratory conditions, evaluate how well medications are working, assess lung function before surgery, and determine fitness for certain occupational activities. They are an important baseline tool and are often repeated periodically to track changes over time.

The testing session typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. It is painless, though you may feel slightly lightheaded or tired from the deep breathing exercises. You should avoid smoking, heavy meals, and vigorous exercise for several hours before the test. Your provider will give you specific instructions at the time of scheduling.

Garden State Medical Group offers pulmonary function testing in our in-house diagnostics center. Results are interpreted by your provider and reviewed with you to discuss your lung health and any treatment recommendations. Call (201) 453-2800 to schedule your PFT.
