Retinopathy Screening

Eye screening to detect retinal damage, especially important for patients with diabetes.

Retinopathy screening is a specialized eye examination used to detect damage to the blood vessels of the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common complications of diabetes and a leading cause of blindness in adults. Regular screening can detect changes in the retina at an early stage, when treatment is most effective.

At Garden State Medical Group, we offer convenient in-office retinopathy screening as part of our comprehensive diabetes care. The screening uses a digital retinal camera to capture high-resolution images of the back of your eye without the need for pupil dilation in most cases. The procedure is quick, painless, and takes only a few minutes.

All patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes should have a retinopathy screening at least once a year. Patients with poorly controlled blood sugar, high blood pressure, or those who have had diabetes for many years may need more frequent screening. Early detection allows for timely referral to an ophthalmologist for treatment, which can prevent or slow vision loss.

In addition to diabetic retinopathy, the screening can detect other eye conditions such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Your provider will review the images and discuss any findings with you. If abnormalities are detected, we will coordinate a referral to an eye specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

Protecting your vision is an essential part of managing diabetes. Schedule your retinopathy screening at Garden State Medical Group by calling (201) 453-2800. Our offices in North Bergen and Secaucus offer this screening as part of your regular diabetes management visits.
